You may never have heard of functional medicine, but it’s really something you should know about. In fact, functional medicine involves an approach to health and wellness that long predates modern, conventional medicine.
There’s a reason why the approach has endured for centuries! Today’s modern medical model centers principally on disease--its prevention and treatment.
Functional medicine, however, takes a far more holistic approach to health and healing. Its emphasis is on the person, not the pathology. That includes, above all, understanding that illness and disease rarely arise from a single factor but from a constellation of root causes, each of which the functional medicine approach seeks to understand and address.
Functional medicine, in other words, is integrative and systemic. The goal is to understand wellness and disease from a comprehensive perspective that includes biology, physiology, psychology, and behavior.
Thus, addressing illness using a functional approach involves the integration of nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional and social wellbeing into the care regime. It seeks to treat the whole person, not simply the disease.
For instance, a functional approach to caring for a person with an autoimmune disorder wouldn’t just address the disease itself using conventional pharmaceuticals and therapies alone. Instead, it might also include a personalized diet plan aimed at reducing inflammation and increasing energy. In addition, metabolic screening might be conducted to determine if vitamin supplementation or hormone therapies are needed. Finally, the care plan might integrate strategies for ensuring healthy sleep, creating a healthy exercise regime, and even pursuing healthy and inspiring activities, from art or music therapy to meditation and mindfulness courses.
As you can see, functional medicine is highly individualized, comprehensive, and deeply person-focused. Its strength is in the relationships formed between the patient and their care team, and in the commitment to a patient-directed pursuit of physical, emotional, and psychological wellness.
