Are You True to Your Heart? An Honest Look at Natural Made Fish Oil

If you’ve been following health trends, chances are that you’ve probably heard of Omega 3 fatty acids at some point – or perhaps already been taking them – and natural made fish oil is a popular form of it. It’s popular enough to become the leading non-vitamin/mineral supplement in the United States, and over 7% of adults have already taken it in the past 30 days at the time of this blog.

Popular supplements, of course, can take the guff for misinformation. We’ve taken the time to sift through the facts from the fish tales so you don’t have to. Please contact Prime Wellness today for any additional questions.

Viewpoint #1: “Fish oil cures everything!”

No, it doesn’t cure everything. But fish oil is very helpful with a lot of things, and there’s plenty of good reasons why! Omega 3 is essential for a healthy heart, brain, digestive system, eyes, skin, and more.

Viewpoint #2: “Fishy burps are just part of the fish oil supplement experience.”

Fresh fish oil does not taste or smell fishy. If it does, it’s a sign that it’s rancid and the peroxide levels have increased. Rancid fish oils contain free radicals toxic to your body and it hinders the potential health benefits. Open the fish oil bottle or capsule and taste it to tell if it’s fresh. If it’s hard to tolerate, don’t consume it. Fish oil supplements like Metagenics containing rosemary extract and Vitamin E tocopherols help prolong the shelf life.

Viewpoint #3: “Why should I take fish oil supplements when I can simply eat more fish?”

It’s true that eating seafood at least two or three times per week can bring a lot of health benefits to the table. But how do you know what the amount of Omega 3 really is in your seafood? Consider the source. Where the fish came from, what they ate, and how they get cooked can affect fatty acid potency. And to start noticing the brain-boosting and inflammation reducing benefits of fish oil, you have to consume a fair amount of milligrams for at least a few months to kick in. This is where natural made fish oil supplements can bridge the gap.

Viewpoint #4: “Flaxseed oil does the same thing as fish oil, right?”

Well, yes and no. Both flaxseed and fish oils contain Omega 3’s, but their forms are a little different. ALA, EPA, and DHA are all Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil contains EPA and DHA, which both play direct roles in cell multiplication, cognitive function, and so on. Plant-based oils like flaxseed contain ALA, which the body converts into EPA and DHA. Flaxseed oil is good for skin health and constipation relief, but you will need a lot in your daily quota to get the health benefits for your brain, eyes, and heart. It takes about one cup of flaxseed oil to get the amount of EPA and DHA equal to one tablespoon of fish oil.

Viewpoint #5: “I’ve read that Omega 3s can act like a blood thinner. Should I be concerned?”

Part of what makes Omega 3 fatty acids effective in supporting heart health is its ability to naturally thin the blood and keep things flowing. In normal daily dosage amounts, this is usually not a problem, but if you’re taking prescribed blood thinners, NSAIDs, or similar medicines, it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor or certified health care practitioner before you start a routine Omega 3 regimen. If you need them, there are also prescription strength Omega 3 supplements available that they can prescribe for you. These special supplements are usually used for heart diseases and similar health problems – another testament to the heart-healthy potential of fish oil.
